GHK-Cu (Copper Peptide): What It Is, How It Works, and the Evidence for Skin and Hair
The short answer
GHK-Cu is a tiny three-amino-acid peptide bound to copper that the body makes naturally, with levels falling as we age. It works mainly by changing which repair genes are switched on, which drives collagen production and tissue remodelling. Topical use for skin has decades of history; injectable use is far less studied.

What is GHK-Cu?
GHK is a small peptide made of three amino acids: glycine, histidine and lysine. It grabs copper tightly, and the copper-bound form, GHK-Cu, is the active one. It was first found in human blood plasma and later in saliva and urine (Targeted Peptide Systems, p. 110).
Your own GHK levels drop with age, from roughly 200 ng/mL in young adults to under 80 ng/mL in older people (Regenerative Resilience, p. 119). That decline is a big part of why it attracts interest in skin ageing and slower repair.
How does GHK-Cu work?
Most repair peptides work by binding a receptor on the cell surface. GHK-Cu works further upstream: it changes gene expression, the instructions cells follow (reference 1). The books call it the peptide that acts “at the origin of the repair gene network” (Regenerative Resilience, p. 116). Documented effects include:
- More collagen (types I and III) and glycosaminoglycans, the building blocks of skin and connective tissue
- More active fibroblasts, the cells that rebuild tissue
- New blood-vessel growth in healing tissue
- Stronger antioxidant defences and lower levels of some inflammatory signals
Gene-expression studies suggest it shifts thousands of genes toward a more youthful pattern (reference 1). That is laboratory data, and how far it translates into whole-body anti-ageing in people is still unsettled (The Longevity Map, p. 73).
GHK-Cu for skin
Skin is where GHK-Cu has the longest track record. It is a staple of cosmetic serums and creams, studied for wound healing, scar remodelling, fine lines, firmness and skin texture (references 1, 2). Topical use is generally well tolerated.
If you are comparing it with retinol or tretinoin: they work differently. Retinoids act through retinoic acid receptors and speed cell turnover; GHK-Cu works through repair-gene activity and collagen. Ask a dermatologist before layering actives, particularly on sensitive skin.
Does GHK-Cu help hair growth?
There is real but early evidence. Laboratory work shows effects on the hair follicle and the scalp tissue around it, and several small human studies of topical copper-peptide products have reported more or thicker hairs. None of it is at the level of large trials, and it isn’t proven the way minoxidil or finasteride are.
A fair summary: promising for hair and worth watching, not a substitute for established treatments.
GHK-Cu side effects and safety
- Topical use: well tolerated, with a long history of use in skin care. Occasional irritation or stinging is possible.
- Injected use: far less studied. Because it carries copper, long or high systemic exposure raises questions about copper balance; chronic copper loading is not harmless (The Longevity Map, p. 73).
- Cancer questions: there is no human evidence that GHK-Cu causes cancer. Some gene-expression research suggests the opposite effect on certain cancer-related genes, but that is lab data, not proof of protection.
- Product quality: injectable products sold as research chemicals are unregulated.
Is GHK-Cu legal or FDA approved?
Copper peptides are widely sold in cosmetics, which are regulated differently from drugs. GHK-Cu is not an FDA-approved drug.
In April 2026 the FDA said it intended to remove injectable GHK-Cu from its Category 2 list (substances flagged against compounding) and to put it before its Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee before the end of February 2027. The FDA stressed that removal from Category 2 does not by itself make a substance eligible for compounding (reference 4).
GHK-Cu vs GLOW vs KLOW
GHK-Cu is also sold inside blends. GLOW combines GHK-Cu with TB-500 and BPC-157. KLOW adds KPV, an anti-inflammatory peptide (Targeted Peptide Systems, pp. 74–77; Regenerative Resilience, pp. 120–123). The logic is coverage: GHK-Cu handles the gene-level remodelling layer, BPC-157 and TB-500 handle blood supply and cell movement, and KPV handles inflammation.

Is copper peptide better than retinol?
They do different things. Retinol works through retinoid receptors and cell turnover; copper peptide works through repair genes and collagen. Many people use both, but check with a dermatologist first.
